WE STAND TOGETHER AGAINST RACISM

‘We stand together against racism’ is an initiative of the six councils of Greater Hobart.

The campaign aims to make a public stand against racism in all its forms, and to demonstrate how everyone has a role to play in stamping out racism in our communities.

TAKE A STAND AGAINST RACISM

There are many ways you can stand with us against racism.

You could learn more about racism and how it operates in society, talk with your friends and family about race and racism, or know what to do if you witness a racist attack. By making a stand together, we can show there is strength in diversity and power in unity.

Here are just some of the ways you can play a role in helping to stamp out racism.

Learn

To effectively address racism, we must understand how it operates and build the necessary skills to confront it. This requires an ongoing commitment to listen, learn and reflect on racism and what it means to be anti-racist. Things you can do include:

  • Educating yourself about racism and how it operates.
  • Find spaces to listen and learn about racism from those with lived experience.
  • Ask yourself the hard questions about the role of racism in society.
  • Start conversations about race and racism with family, friends and colleagues so that they can learn and reflect too.

Act

You may witness acts of racism in your own life. As a bystander this can feel uncomfortable, but your voice and actions are a powerful tool for standing against racism. If you witness racism, there are several things you can do.

  • Most importantly, ensure the safety and wellbeing of the person being targeted. Ask if they are ok and if they need any immediate support.
  • If it is safe to do so, say something to demonstrate to the perpetrator that racism is unacceptable.
  • Record the details of the incident to report to police or the relevant authority.

Report

Reporting racism is an important mechanism for understanding the existence, nature, and severity of racism. If you witness or experience racism, there are several ways you can report it depending on the nature of the incident. Some places to report include:
